Tiger Please Change Name....

Welsh alt rock gods and Sunday Rock Show faves Tiger Please are changing their name to 'The People The Poet'

The band explained the decision on their tumblr feed...

"Just over a year ago, Tiger Please began writing our debut album after being together since 2008.We decided that we wanted to write an album based on real-life stories and experiences requested and received from fans and friends across the country. It seemed such a simple idea at the time, but soon it spiralled into something which has taken over our lives.
When we started Tiger Please back in 2008, we were just 5 guys hoping to write some good music and inspire people the way that our favourite bands inspired us; but mainly we just wanted to have a good time. We’ve achieved many things as a band that we are very proud of, and gained many loyal fans who have inspired us to be the band we are today - but taking on the task of the album has become something bigger than just the 5 of us.
We are now representing the stories of other people, and it has become our responsibility to capture the emotions that they’ve been through, in the hope of helping others who may be going through the same situations. The people that have welcomed us into their lives have made us laugh, cry, and inspired us with their life stories. They have also put their trust in our hands, which has meant so much to us.
This responsibility has forced us to grow as people and musicians , and we no longer feel that we can tell these stories under the name of ‘Tiger Please’.
This brings us to the announcement that we shall no longer be carrying on under the name ‘Tiger Please’, but we will be continuing this journey - as ‘the People the Poet’.
It’s sad to part with a name which we’ve seen so much success with, but we hope you will understand why we felt it was the right time for the change. This is more than just a simple change of a name - it is a tribute to the people who have trusted us with their stories, our fans.A band would be nothing without the people who turn up to the shows or listen to their music, and OUR songs would be nothing without the experiences in YOUR lives which are written in song or poem.A lot of bands say ‘our band would be nothing without our fans’.In our case - that is literally true. These songs are your stories. You are our band.
The band has also grown beyond the 5 of us, musically and instrumentally.During this year of writing and demoing the record, we’ve had the privilege of having some amazing musicians contribute their talents to our songs/your stories. We’re very blessed to have these people as part of our record and our live shows - and we can’t wait for you to meet them.
Our last shows as Tiger Please/first shows as ‘the People the Poet’ will be :
February
24th London Lexington
25th Bridgend Hobos
We’re also delighted to announce that our first tour as ‘the People the Poet’ will be as support to Charlie Simpson on his UK Headline Tour at the following dates and venues:
March
24th Birmingham Academy 2
25th Liverpool Academy
27th Sheffield Academy 2
28th Newcastle University
30th Edinburgh Liquid Rooms
31st Dundee Fat Sams
If you’d like to hear what the future holds then please visit www.facebook.com/thepeoplethepoet where we will be hosting 2 new tracks :
‘Sing’ which we recorded with the awesome Gil Norton (Foo Fighters/Jimmy Eat World/Counting Crows) back last Summer.
and
‘Being Human’ (which some of you Tiger Please fans will remember as an album demo) - This track is also available as a FREE DOWNLOAD
For an in-depth description of both songs, including the actual emails and stories that inspired the tracks please visit http://thepeoplethepoet.tumblr.com/
We would like to sincerely thank everyone that has supported Tiger Please and helped us achieve more than we ever imagined, and we hope that you continue to support the People the Poet  through this New Year and beyond
the People the Poet"

Needless to say we at the Sunday Rockshow will continue to support the boys as their new career continues.

OPINION - of vinyl and digital formats

It probably has nothing to do with the bands... 'probably just an another try by a struggling EMI, who sold Olympic Studios (Hendrix, Stones, Purple, Floyd, Bowie, Lizzy) in 2010 and have even considered selling Abbey Rd. For me it's a no-brainer, the majority of pre-1990 recordings and hardly any rock was recorded digitally or made for digital formats even uber-technically clean-sounding things like 90125 by Yes were recorded to tape and mastered for vinyl. So it makes sense if you want to listen to any of those releases as they were intended it's still best to get a good record deck and try and find a reasonably healthy original copy.

It's just a pain in the arse when they release every other format under the sun but ignore the original production format. It would be so great to see good quality 180g re-pressings of some of these classic back catalogues, the Beatles, AC/DC, Zep, 'Floyd, Marillion LPs as they were intended from original analog masters that haven't been digitally converted somewhere along the way. Sadly most are as even if the analog recording reaches the cutting lathe un-noodled with most lathes now use a digital delay in the creation of the vinyl masters they use to make the A & B-side stampers for pressing the records.
It's a sad thing that production budgets for music, excluding self-financed independent acts, have gone from hundreds of thousands in the '70s and '80s to maybe 10/20K or less, that everything is rushed, done digitally and for cheap, that new bands aren't supported and developed like they were, 'given the chance over 3 or 4 albums to become successful, establish a following or a brand, that great studios are shutting, great engineers and sound technicians are hard-pushed to find steady work, that the art of making records and quality of recordings is a ghost (in most cases) of what it used to be but hey the world changes and it's not the 1980s, it's just that the word 'BUSINESS' has now grown to become a lot more important than the word 'music'.
Sad thing is it seems it's not only Boo! for us but it's Boo! for them, the majors, but hey who cares about quality 'wh3n you can list3n to a stol3n d1g1tr@sh v3rs10n 0f pr3tty mu$h @nyth1ng y0u l1ke 0n th3 1nt3rn3t @nd wh0 n33ds g00d f00d wh3n you can 3@t p0t n00dl3$'.

ALBUM OF THE YEAR 2011 SHORTLIST ANNOUNCED

Over the past few months I have, with the aid and input of 'the judging panel', been cutting down a long list of over 100 qualifying albums into a shortlist of twelve that will be look studied hard and reviewed by our panel of experts. This year the choice was harder than ever, and the need to assure that shortlist covers all genres and represents both Bristol based acts as well as those from other parts of the UK and beyond (and thus reflect the range of bands and music the show has featured in the past 12 months), has resulted in some pre-shortlist faves not making the final 12. This is no reflection of any album not featured here, and is the result of some very tough and often painful decision making. After all 2011 was a bit of classic year all round, and many of those who failed to make this shortlist for one reason or another will be mentioned in a 'Highly recommended' list that will be published in a few days..

Anyway, the 12 contenders are....

Awake - 'Forever More'
Bide Your Time - 'Point Proven'
Bi-Polar Sluts - 'Out 4 Dinner'
Crash Street Kids - 'Sweet Creatures'
Fornost Arnor - 'The Death Of A Rose'
Hate Gauge - 'Hope, Envy, Love and Lies'
Pallas - 'XXV'
Pendragon - 'Passion'
Rita Lynch - 'Crack On'
Somnus - 'The Stench Of Deceit'
The Skuzzies - 'The Skuzzies'
Todd Dillingham - 'Song Cycle 2011'

So What Happens Now?
Well we have a panel of 12 good music people and true.(including myself), they are musicians, radio DJ's, a record producer, a gig promoter and a couple of the shows most loyal and oldest listeners. They will give all the above albums a good listen over the next month or so and I'll collate the results and the winner of both ALBUM OF THE YEAR and ALBUM OF A YEAR FROM A LOCAL ARTIST will be announced sometime in February.

So Where's the new Megadeth or Black Veil Brides album in the list?
This award is designed to celebrate underground acts, new talent and those unsung heroes who have been plugging away for years without mainstream success.

To Qualify an album must meet the following criteria
1) Be a full length release
2) Be either a self released record, on a small indie label, an album length demo, or an import album not generally released in the UK
3) Have been featured on the show during the previous year

The shortlist is compiled from a full list of qualifying album based panel recommendations and listener feedback, and is designed to reflect the diversity in styles and origins of the music featured on the show.

Krankschaft Release Chrimbo Single and Announce Live Dates!!

Acid - psyche legends Krankschaft have issued a free download Christmas single to bring a little 'Spirit of The Age' to the festive season.

The band, who formed as backing band for the late great Robert Calvert (former Hawkwind vocalist) in the early 1980's around the core of former Inner City Unit members Steve Pond and Dead Fred have recently expanded their line up with the addition of drummer Darren Butler and bass player Scott Myers, and the new single is the first recording to feature the new line up.

The track, entitled Everybody's Little Song Of Christmas, is a catchy little ditty in the traditional ICU / Krankshaft mode and can be download free from the bands website at http://www.doremi.co.uk/krankschaft/

To celebrate the release of the single Krankschaft have announced a couple of live dates. On Nov. 26th they are at The Man On The Moon, where they share the stage with classic festival outfit Here & Now, and then on Dec 3rd they appear at the Hydrant in Brighton as part of the annual Judge Trev Thoms memorial concert, where they will be play a set as Krankschaft, the they will be joined by Nik Turner to perform as Inner City Unit. ticket details for both shows can be found on the bands website (linked above)
